The design notably blocks overhead sunlight into the yard, save for a small ribbon of windows at the top with secure screening. Cavalcante was charged with escape after his capture, and his next hearing in that case is scheduled for Wednesday.

When Jason Mesiarik heard the gunshots that were fired during an encounter his neighbor had with escaped prisoner Danelo Cavalcante Monday night, he called police to report the incident, Mesiarik told CNN. Several law enforcement agencies have been searching for Cavalcante in the area for nearly two weeks after he escaped from prison. “I had just finished feeding our horses when I heard the gunshots a minute or two after ten and called it in,” Mesiarik told CNN. “You never hear gunshots at night and usually I’m hearing a lot larger calibers, shotguns, targets but this one sounded like a 22," he said. Pennsylvania officials said Tuesday that Cavalcante has a .22 caliber rifle that he stole from a resident's garage overnight.

Danelo Cavalcante, the Pennsylvania prison escapee, has now been roaming wooded areas and small suburban towns for nearly two weeks, presumably with no shelter and little to eat or drink, as he flees the hundreds of police officers desperately searching for him. Back home in rural Brazil, his mother, Iracema Cavalcante, sees a son whose life has trained him to live alone and overcome hardships, preparing him for his long flight from the authorities after being convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend. But Ms. Cavalcante, while saying her son stabbed his ex-girlfriend in Pennsylvania in 2021 and murdered a man in Brazil in 2017, insists her son, even if armed, “did not pose a threat to anyone.” He is just fighting to survive, she said, as he has for much of his life. “His training was his suffering,” said Ms. Cavalcante, in her first interview since her son escaped from prison last month. “It was going to sleep hungry, it was waking up as I wondered what to feed them.”
